A live-action TV series based on the popular Internet game “Space Nation” is in the works. The famous Hollywood director Roland Emmerich and producer Marco Weber are in charge of the project. They don’t plan to release the series on a traditional network or streaming site, however. Instead, they’re going for non-traditional methods like licensing the content to be streamed in a mini-window format. That means gamers could watch the series and play their game at the same time.
Emmerich and Weber want to finance a good chunk of the series’ budget through the game’s economy and its own digital currency. For those who aren’t familiar with the game, “Space Nation” is an online, multiplayer game where players role-play as starship captains. The game is made using blockchain technology, so players can buy, sell, and trade in-game using tokens called Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). This essentially means that players can participate in an in-game economy using digital tokens.
The company that developed Space Nation, Space Nation Inc., was co-founded by Emmerich and Weber, along with former senior project manager at Blizzard-Activision, Jerome Wu, and game developer Tony Tang. Emmerich, in case you didn’t know, is an award-winning film director who’s been behind hit movies like Independence Day, 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, and Godzilla.
Early funding for the project reached a cool $50 million and the company planned right from the start to create a multi-media platform. So far, they’ve released some animated shorts based on the game’s character “Zoey”, and the game has “soft launched” out of testing. You can download it for PC now.
With some good backing from Hollywood and the gaming industry, ambitious plans, and a ton of funding, Space Nation’s got a lot going for it. Yet there are still hurdles to overcome. For example, integrating NFT’s into online multi-player games hasn’t quite become popular with mainstream gamers yet. The “space opera” genre, where Space Nation is set, has seen success with games like Eve Online and No Man’s Sky – let’s see how Space Nation fares.
