30s Summary
Ethereum’s Starknet hit a record of 857 transactions per second (TPS) during a stress test, outperforming competitors like Coinbase’s Base network. Over a 24-hour period, it averaged 127.5 TPS. The test simulated a popular video game environment, making it accessible to casual gamers. Starknet’s peak performance was nearly eleven times faster than Base’s. However, real-world issues like network congestion and rising gas fees could pose challenges. StarkWare’s Eli Ben-Sasson indicated plans to further increase Starknet’s TPS capacity.

On the 29th of October, Ethereum’s Starknet, a way of improving the performance of blockchain, hit a record during a stress test. It managed 857 transactions per second (TPS) at its peak, which is quite an achievement!
Over a 24-hour period, it averaged 127.5 TPS. This shows that it can handle busy blockchain apps, but there’s still a question of how well it’ll do when it needs to grow even bigger.
Eli Ben-Sasson, the boss at StarkWare, said that some networks try to hit high TPS by taking shortcuts, but this test proved that Starknet can grow without cutting corners:
“This isn’t just a case of ‘Starknet works well.’ It shows that blockchain as a whole is moving forward in big steps, getting ready for more and more people to use it.”
For this stress test, Starknet simulated the environment of a popular video game. The test revealed quicker transaction speeds and better performance than competitors like Coinbase’s Base network.
The test helped show off Starknet’s capabilities within a context that casual gamers could understand. “Gamers could easily get involved in the test without having to tangle with complicated blockchain tech,” Ben-Sasson said.
According to data from L2Beat, Starknet’s 857 TPS at its peak during the stress test completely outdid Base’s 79.92 TPS peak on the same day. It was nearly eleven times as fast as the Coinbase network!
But there’s a caveat to these test results. The controlled environment of the test might not be the same as the real world. When networks get bigger to support more users, they can face unpredictable problems like congestion and an increase in gas fees, as we’ve seen with networks like Ethereum.
The Starknet team isn’t resting on its laurels though. Eli Ben-Sasson confirmed there are more exciting things coming their way. “This is just the beginning of our push to go beyond our current TPS limits. We’ve got plenty more in the works that will let Starknet’s TPS reach new heights, like the launch of the STWO prover in early 2025,” he said.
