Paul Allen, the creator of SOAR, had previously made a family social networking app on Facebook that got tons of users – 120 million to be exact. Project Liberty claims to be the top contender for TikTok’s US assets if they ever have to be sold off.
Project Liberty is teaming up with SOAR.com in a big way. SOAR.com has a bunch of AI-powered data sharing and social networking portals. They were made by Ancestry’s founder and entrepreneur, Paul Allen.
Project Liberty, which is all about decentralized social media, is backed by real estate big shot Frank McCourt, who’s thrown in a hefty $250 million. The project is about creating a database of people’s social connections that anyone can access, called the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP). They also make use of cryptocurrency (Frequency) which is part of the Polkadot ecosystem.
Social media platform owners like Elon Musk hold all the power right now. It seems like an ideal time for decentralized alternatives to get more users.
SOAR’s AI studio includes a Family Portal, an app originally built on Facebook that has 120 million users. This portal uses AI transcription technology to catalog and store interactions within families. There’s a Citizens Portal as well. This is a search-friendly local community government data service. It has more than a million hours of transcripts and info from city, county, and state meetings.
Paul Allen was drawn to Project Liberty because it promises users that they’ll always be in control of their data. This is very different from Facebook and Ancestry.com after he left. His belief is that this must be done at the technology level, not by altering a service agreement later on.
Allen feels that a future with a couple of trillion-dollar companies controlling the internet is not what we want. Internet rights should respect human rights just like real-world rights in countries do.
Project Liberty, under the Frequency blockchain, has already attracted 1.3 million users. SOAR’s Family and Citizens expects to bring in tens of millions more in the future, as people search for alternatives to the dominant social media platforms. Project Liberty’s president, Tomicah Tillemann, said on top of offering decentralization, it’s an opportunity “to do AI right.”
Project Liberty may also buy the U.S. version of Chinese-owned TikTok (the “people’s bid”) if the firm is forced to sell to a U.S. owner. Tillemann mentioned a lot of action around the TikTok bid and commitments from potential investors.
He said, “We are widely regarded at this point as the leading bidder for the U.S. assets of TikTok in the event that they become available”. They’re planning on bringing TikTok and its 170 million U.S. users onto the same infrastructure as their partnership with the Frequency blockchain.
Project Liberty will host its inaugural Summit on the Future of the Internet in Washington D.C. on November 21-22.
