Pump.fun, a fun and decentralized platform where people can make and promote their own Solana-based memecoins, has run into a bit of hot water. Some folks are using its livestream feature to share violent and harmful content. Some people in the crypto world are calling for stronger moderation on the site, or even that they switch off the livestream feature.
Recently, a Pump.fun user called Beau spotted somebody threatening to commit suicide on a livestream if their memecoin didn’t reach a certain market cap. Beau works on safety for a project called Pudgy Penguins and called for Pump.fun to step into the situation. They wanted the site to halt the livestream, help the individual in crisis, and generally put a lid on the livestream feature since it’s starting to get out of hand.
There have been other instances of disturbing content too. One user allegedly threatened to commit violence each time their coin’s value went up, and another threatened that they would even shoot up a school if their memecoin tanked.
Some people in the community have raised their eyebrows, calling the livestream feature a “pipeline of felonies.” They are urging the site to disable the feature until there’s serious moderation in place to prevent such dangerous situations.
In response to this criticism, Alon the leader of Pump.fun (that’s a fake name he’s using online), said that they’re taking things seriously but, they’re also doing their best with moderating content. Alon says they’ve got a big moderation team working 24/7 and engineers trying to help manage the large scale of coins, streams, and comments.
Pump.fun says it’s doing its best to moderate harmful content and put user safety first. But, the community is still asking for more upfront action to stop this kind of content from being shared. So far, it’s unclear whether Pump.fun will put in extra safeguards or change its livestream feature to address these concerns.
