So, Bybit, the digital currency exchange has officially said it’s going to stop people in France from taking out their money, as well as handling their crypto from Jan. 8, 2025, 8:00 AM. Why? The French finance guys have been putting heat on them lately. Bybit has told folks who’ll be affected to get their dough out before the cut-off to avoid any hassles with accessing their accounts or moving money around.
Bybit’s next step is to send over any unclaimed money that’s more than 10 USD Coin (USDC) over to Coinhouse, a French crypto money holder with all the official clearances. To get their hands back on their cash, users will have to go through Coinhouse’s check-out process. As for anything less than 10 USDC in their accounts, Bybit’s taking out the equivalent of 10 USDC.
This bold move from Bybit comes as law-makers from around the world are trying to get a firm handle on crypto dealings. Bybit’s also said that they will start moving money over to Coinhouse after Jan. 8, 2025, which will stop any withdrawals until the whole thing’s done by Jan. 16.
So, for anyone in France with a Coinhouse account, if they’ve been verified and all their info matches the one on their Bybit account, they’ll see their money go into their account shortly after January 16. Anyone who doesn’t have a Coinhouse account will need to sign up, get a full security check to be able to get their money.
But Bybit did make it clear that they won’t charge folks to change their money to US Coin or to move it to Coinhouse. But, unverified Coinhouse holders will have to pay a holding fee of either 0.16% of the value of their money or 1 USDC a month, depending which one costs more, until they finish the full security check.
Meanwhile, France has been cracking down on its rules for digital cash services and is working on making it safer for people. Back in December 2022, the French Senate’s finance people brought up quickening the compulsory clearance for digital money businesses to wipe out the chance for them to operate without full approval till 2026. This decision seems to be a reaction to the disruption in the market at a global level. They’re aiming to stop the option of operating without getting the go-ahead from French Finance Authority.
