Get ready gaming fanatics, Ragnarok Landverse, a Web3 version of the classic MMORPG Ragnarok Online, is set to land on the Ronin Network. The fresh version called Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis is scheduled for its debut around the start of 2025.
Ragnarok Online has been a hit since the 2000s, racking up more than 100 million players and bringing in over $2 billion. Its Web3 version is made possible by a collab between Ronin and the gaming platform Zentry, although the deals of their partnership haven’t been disclosed.
Ragnarok Landverse first launched in September 2023 by Zentry and has already attracted over 400,000 players and made $18.9 million. This game is a big deal, especially in Southeast Asia. But just a heads up, Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis won’t be a sequel to Ragnarok Landverse. As the folks at Ronin put it, it’s a “fresh new experience”.
Through an update on social media, we found out that for now, existing Landverse stuff won’t be usable in the Genesis version on Ronin. Down the line, live servers and players from Landverse will shift to Ronin though.
Zentry, who scored a whopping $150 million in early funding in August, is also going to validate nodes on Ronin and introduce its ZENT token to Ronin. We’re also expecting incentive-based liquidity pools to be launched on Ronin’s Katana decentralized exchange.
Gamers were welcomed into the Ronin community in December by Zentry through the new Nexus Player Portal. The portal offers some cool features like a universal digital identity and a lifetime reward system. Zentry’s CEO said about the collaboration, “Together, we’re paving the way for future Biggest gaming IPs to transition into Web3. […] We are fully committed to making our vision of onboarding 50 million global users to Web3 gaming a reality.”
With more than 3 million transactions per day and up to 4.7 million users per month, thanks in large part to the game Axie Infinity, Ronin has proven its firepower. In fact, Ronin already hosts Ragnarok: Monster World.
Meanwhile, Sky Mavis downsized by 21% in November to free up resources. Teasing us, they hinted at a new game launch in 2025. All versions of Ragnarok stem from the South Korean comic Ragnarök, whose story loosely follows Norse mythology.
The foundation for Ragnarok Landverse is Ragnarok Online, which was introduced in 2002 by the South Korean game developer Gravity. Gravity has teamed up with gaming studio Maxion Labs, which Zentry partially owns.
