Apple has rolled out its new artificial intelligence (AI) tool, Apple Intelligence, for some iPhone, iPad and Mac users. But according to early feedback, the features are not quite as impressive as expected.
They announced the launch of the first bunch of AI capabilities on October 28. These were added to iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1. The main feature, called “Writing Tools,” allows you to revise, proofread, and summarize text across various apps. And interacting with Siri is supposed to be more lifelike and conversational.
Other features include access to ChatGPT via Writing Tools and Siri. This AI model gives you better understanding of images and documents. Apple also enhanced the Photos app with a “natural language search,” enabling you to search for a specific photo by describing it instead of scrolling through loads of pictures.
Despite the hype, not all users are happy with the new AI capabilities. Both The New York Times’ Max Eddy and WIRED’s Julian Chokkattu, who tested the pre-release versions, did not seem blown away. They expressed that the AI didn’t significantly enhance their user experience.
Adding to the disappointment was the confusing rollout of Apple Intelligence. To access it, US-based users need to have a compatible device and the latest Apple software. They then have to join a waitlist. For non-users, the process is even more complicated, involving changes to region and language settings.
This anguished some users, with one saying it’s the “sloppiest rollout Apple has ever done,” and another suggesting Apple should’ve waited until everything was ready before releasing the AI to all users.
Apple plans to launch a visual intelligence feature in December that lets users learn more about objects and places instantly. For example, you could get information about a restaurant as you’re standing in front of it, or translate text from one language to another. They’re also rolling out the Priority Notifications feature in the coming months, which delivers personalized intelligent notifications.
Regarding privacy, users can choose if they want to integrate ChatGPT with the new Writing Tools and advanced Siri features.
