OpenAI, the guys in charge of ChatGPT, had to give a big “Oops, our bad!” to their hundreds of millions of users. Their AI chatbot had a bit of a hiccup and went down for a bit, just after it started working with Apple’s latest software update. They’re fully aware of the problem and have their best computer whizzes on the job to get it fixed.
As per a tweet on Dec. 12, they confirmed, “We’re experiencing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix.” Good news for Aussies though, ChatGPT was back and live at the time this was going down.
ChatGPT had just become buddies with the latest version of Siri on Apple iPhones, iPads and Macs, and that’s when the problem happened. OpenAI didn’t give a full breakdown, but they did drop some techy stuff on Cointelegraph like “A configuration change unexpectedly caused many of our servers to become unavailable, resulting in a temporary interruption of service for our products.”
People trying to get to ChatGPT’s API were met with a pretty disappointing, “ChatGPT is currently unavailable” message. But they also promised folks that they had “identified the issue” and were “working to roll out a fix.”
Anyone using Sora, OpenAI’s video model, probably had some trouble too. On the brighter side, OpenAI said that things for ChatGPT and Sora were “largely recovered” around 3:53 am UTC on Dec. 12.
People really started kicking up a fuss about ChatGPT’s network failures from around 11:07 pm UTC on Dec. 11. Before things slowed down, they got a wild 1,532 reports over a 15-minute span, just about half an hour later.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t a first for ChatGPT; they’ve had similar hiccups a few times before, in June and August. This last problem cropped up at the same time as ChatGPT’s hook-up with Apple Intelligence, which lets Siri use ChatGPT to answer specific requests.
Meanwhile, some folks using Meta’s Facebook and Instagram had their own issues to deal with on Dec. 11. But a few hours later Meta said they had sorted out “99% of the issues and were finalizing some “last checks.”
