OpenAI has said sorry to its huge user base of 200 million when its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, got interrupted right after it became part of the latest Apple software update. “We’re offline at the moment. We’ve found out what’s causing this and are getting a solution ready,” said OpenAI in a recent social media post. The chatbot was back up and running in Australia when this was reported.
This blip happened on the same day ChatGPT became part of the new version of Siri on all Apple gadgets like iPhones, iPads, and Macs. While OpenAI didn’t give away what caused the issue, they told us: “An unexpected adjustment made a bunch of our servers stop working, which temporarily stopped some of our services.”
A bunch of users trying to use ChatGPT’s API saw a message saying: “ChatGPT is not available right now” and that OpenAI had “found the issue” and was “gearing up to roll out a fix.” OpenAI’s own video making model, Sora, was also affected, the company mentioned.
OpenAI later confirmed that ChatGPT and Sora traffic was “mostly back to normal” in an update early in the morning on Dec. 12. Complaints of ChatGPT’s network falling over started appearing around late evening on Dec. 11, with the most reports coming in about half an hour later, before the number of reports started dwindling.
This is just the latest in a series of network mishaps for ChatGPT in recent times, following similar hiccups in June and August. This happened right when ChatGPT got paired with Apple Intelligence, which now lets Siri use ChatGPT to help answer certain questions, like those about photos and documents, as Apple said on Dec. 11.
These fresh features that combine ChatGPT and Apple Intelligence work on most iPhone 15s and newer models. Meanwhile, some users of Meta’s Facebook and Instagram were hit by a network interruption on Dec. 11. A few hours later, Meta said it had sorted out “99% of the problems and were putting the finishing touches on a few “last checks.”
