Back in 2010, a dude named Laszlo Hanyecz got a little hungry and ordered two Papa John’s pizzas. Here’s the kicker though, he paid for them in Bitcoin – 10,000 Bitcoins to be exact. Fast forward to today, and those pizzas would cost him a staggering $978 million if he were to do the same transaction at current market prices.
When talking with CBS’ 60 Minutes back in 2019, Hanyecz looked back on what’s now known as the first commercial Bitcoin transaction in history. He shared: “I Just posted on the Forum. I said. ‘You know, if anybody’s interested, I’m offering 10,000 Bitcoin in exchange for some pizza.’ Somebody there said, ‘Hey, I’ll take you up on that offer,’ so I sent him the 10,000 Bitcoin. He paid with his credit card, and the pizza showed up at my door.”
This rather expensive slice of history has become a running joke in the crypto community, especially as Bitcoin prices keep setting new records year after year.
On the anniversary of the pizza purchase, which is affectionately known as ‘Pizza Day’ to Bitcoin enthusiasts, the 10,000 BTC Hanyecz spent, valued at $41 in 2010, was worth a whopping $4.4 million by 2016. By 2018, the value had jumped to $41 million, and by 2020 it had hit an insane $80 million. And even with the bear market in 2023 slightly lowering the costs, those 10,000 BTC would still be worth about $268 million.
According to some industry hot shots, Bitcoin prices could reach $180,000 by 2025. If Hanyecz were to celebrate Pizza Day 2025 by ordering another two pies with 10,000 Bitcoin, he might be out nearly $2 billion. Now, that’s one pricey pizza party!
