Vitalik Buterin, one of the founders of Ethereum, has stated that researching advanced cryptography is a key objective on their journey forward. This is crucial to ensure future quantum computers can’t break encryption. He recently discussed this in a blog post, sharing his thoughts on the step of their plan named “The Splurge.”
Buterin was quick to stress that there is still a lot that needs to be done. When it comes to quantum computers strong enough to break through encryptions, he stated that they were yet to be in existence. According to him, the so-called quantum computers advertised online are either prototypes or not genuine quantum ones.
He also noted that even if quantum computers become a reality soon, it may take several years for them to be commonly used by the lay public. His comments were part of his Splurge plan which outlines his ideas on improving the existing elements of Ethereum.
The Ethereum co-founder shared that each stage of their plan tackles various parts of the digital currency, with “The Splurge” being mainly focussed on improvements and specialty issues related to Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).
On that note, Buterin discussed that there were several minor aspects in Ethereum’s design which were nonetheless quite valuable to its success, though they don’t comfortably fit within broader categories, which is exactly what The Splurge looks to address.
In terms of key goals, The Splurge intends to bring the EVM to a steady ‘endgame state’, usher account abstraction in-protocol, enhance the economic efficiency of transaction fees, and delve into advanced cryptography.
In line with this, Ethereum’s upcoming update, called Pectra, is expected to be launched later this year or early next and will feature steps for the enhancement of EVMs. Another proposal scheduled for release in Pectra aims to make the “convenience features” of account abstraction available to all users.
This essentially means that users could use a wallet-like smart contract, greatly broadening the ways in which they could interact with the blockchain. As for transaction fees, Buterin proposed a completely new system called “multidimensional gas”, which, he noted, could relieve the pressure to optimize performance.
